Gaia-Pythia

Finished Gaia-Pythia

Strange painting. Don’t know what to think of it, yet. But it surprises me. And that’s what I always tell my students: “Surprise Yourself!” So that’s probably a good thing.

DNA structures combined with this strange, ferocious woman. The beginning of the world,  the Ëarth Mother”.

Oil on canvas. 70 x 90 cm.

Gaia10

Detail of a new painting, with Gaia as the main character. The painting isn’t finished yet, but I think the face will do (although  it’s rather tricky, to show “work in progress”).

Out of her head (and eyes) DNA structures are “pouring out”. So see this as part One. There’s more to come!

And: “Die begin van die aarde”! (poem by Antjie Krog)

Oil on canvas, 70 x 90 cm (detail approximately 20 x 30 cm)

Völuspá 5

I decided to investigate the Völuspá series more (see the small image, Völuspá 1). It’s a tricky path to follow.

My work has everything to do with the creation of life, the creation of the world. Shapes are getting their form. When is something just paint and when does it transform into an organic form of life? The laws of nature, are yet to be made.

So there is chaos. But that doesn’t mean you can just paint whatever you want and that you don’t have to deal with the laws of the visual arts.

Think about colour contrast, composition, texture, depth, light etc. etc.

Völuspá

Völuspá is the first and best known poem of the Edda. It tells the story of the creation of the world.

It is one of the most important primary sources for the study of Norse Mythology.

I was not present at the time, but I think these drawings where made approximately one hour after Charles Darwin published his book “On the origin of species”, in 1859.

By the way, these drawings are for sale. If you do buy them, I will donate the money to charity:  “SAVE THE DINOSAUR”.

Promise.

This painting is about the creation of the world, the start of it all. Based also on the Edda, the Nordic mythology.

Shapes are beginning to form, and in some corners, there’s what you can call “first evidence of possible life”.

Preformation and the Edda

This painting is called “Preformation”. Not too long ago, scientists thought that the human embryo, the baby, was a tiny version of a grown human being. Waiting in the sperm cell. And just had to grow (in the womb of the woman ofcourse).

I also read a lot about “the Edda”, a very old book about the creation of the world (Nordic mythology). This is also a theme a use sometimes.

And explains the environment the sperm cell is “floating” in, in this painting.
