New oilpainting, 100 x 90 cm
This painting is also part of my Edda project. The Edda is a collection of old poems. Two literary works, one known as the Prose Edda. The other one is known as the Poetic Edda.

This one is more delicate, more refined. But the dark piece on the top, makes you wonder.
“Is everything alright, or….?”

This painting, 130 x 160 cm, oil on canvas, was made during the period I worked on the painting Evolution 1 (painting of decembre).
It consists of a lot of different layers. Sometimes even with the same color (red over red over red over red). This technique (called “glaceren” in Dutch) makes that the colors increase in depth (sort of a velvet texture).
It’s very difficult to catch this on camera. But belief me, when you’re in front of this one, it almost seems possible to stick your hand inside the painting.
This is an old technique, used for instance by Rembrandt van Rijn, the famous Dutch painter (see example).
This painting is called “Preformation”. Not too long ago, scientists thought that the human embryo, the baby, was a tiny version of a grown human being. Waiting in the sperm cell. And just had to grow (in the womb of the woman ofcourse).
I also read a lot about “the Edda”, a very old book about the creation of the world (Nordic mythology). This is also a theme a use sometimes.
And explains the environment the sperm cell is “floating” in, in this painting.

I guess I am an oldfashioned artist. Well, at least my themes are: landscapes, nature, women.
On the other hand, it depends on what you do with these themes.
As Oscar Wilde put it: “No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist”.

“Art only begins where Imitation ends.”
